Abstract

Increasing minoritized student success in higher education requires a paradigm shift. In addition to remediating college students, greater attention must be given to preparing faculty and staff to meet the needs of diverse learners. In this study, faculty learning community (FLC) participants submitted journal entries to explore how exposure to anti-deficit research on student success enhanced their thinking and practice. In collaboration with the FLC co-facilitators, seven participants engaged in critical participatory action research and identified how they gained consciousness about deficit thinking, understood the significance of anti-deficit perspectives, and reconciled deficit and anti-deficit research in their praxes.
