Abstract

Using the Interdisciplinary General Education (IGE) Department at Cal Poly Pomona as an example, the author proposes ways in which academic departments, when structured and run as both student and faculty learning communities, can create transformative visions and long-lasting change for faculty and student learning and scholarship, instill a collaborative culture open to adjustment and improvement of curricular and pedagogical goals and practices, and use assessment as a way to focus faculty attention and determine whether goals are being achieved.
